The Nissan Leaf has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Bolt doesn’t offer knee airbags.

Both the Leaf and the Bolt have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and available front parking sensors.

The Leaf’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Bolt’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Chevrolet vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 9 more problems per 100 vehicles, Chevrolet is ranked fifth.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Nissan 4 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

The Leaf S’ standard electric motor produces 85 lbs.-ft. more torque (254 vs. 169) than the Bolt’s electric motor. The Leaf +’s standard electric motor produces 4 more horsepower (214 vs. 210) and 92 lbs.-ft. more torque (261 vs. 169) than the Bolt’s electric motor.

The Leaf can travel longer on a full charge than the Bolt on a full charge:

The Leaf has a standard locking charge port which locks and unlocks with the power locks. The Bolt doesn’t have a locking charge port. A locking charge port prevents tampering and damage.

For better stopping power the Leaf’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Bolt:

The Leaf’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Bolt are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the Leaf Platinum+’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Bolt (235/45R19 vs. 215/50R17).

The Leaf Platinum+’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Bolt’s 50 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Leaf has standard 18-inch wheels. Only 17-inch wheels are available on the Bolt. The Leaf Platinum+ has standard 19-inch wheels.

For superior ride and handling, the Nissan Leaf has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Chevrolet Bolt has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Leaf has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Leaf flat and controlled during cornering. The Bolt’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Leaf is 2.7 inches wider in the front and 2.4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Bolt.

For better maneuverability, the Leaf’s turning circle is 2.3 feet tighter than the Bolt’s (35.4 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

The Leaf has 1.9 inches more front hip room, 1.4 inches more front shoulder room, 1.4 inches more rear hip room and 2.7 inches more rear shoulder room than the Bolt.

The Leaf has a much larger cargo volume than the Bolt with its rear seat up (20 vs. 16.2 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Leaf Platinum+’s power liftgate can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Bolt doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening cargo door.

When two different drivers share the Leaf Platinum+, the memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Bolt doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Leaf Platinum+’s standard easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Bolt doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Leaf Platinum+ has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction, infotainment and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Bolt doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Leaf’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Bolt’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

When the Leaf Platinum+ is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Bolt’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the Leaf and the Bolt offer available heated front seats. The Leaf Platinum+ also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Bolt.
