Both the Z and the Prelude have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Safety
Reliability
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Honda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 10 more problems per 100 vehicles, Honda is ranked 6th.
Engine
The Z’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 200 more horsepower (400 vs. 200) and 118 lbs.-ft. more torque (350 vs. 232) than the Prelude’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The Z NISMO’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 220 more horsepower (420 vs. 200) and 152 lbs.-ft. more torque (384 vs. 232) than the Prelude’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.
Fuel Economy and Range
The Z has 5.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Prelude (16.4 vs. 10.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.
Brakes and Stopping
For better stopping power the Z NISMO’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Prelude:

13.8 inches |

The Z’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Prelude are solid, not vented.
Tires and Wheels
For better traction, the Z has larger standard tires than the Prelude (245/45R18 vs. 235/40R19). The Z NISMO’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Prelude (F:255/40R19 & R:285/35R19 vs. 235/40R19).
The Z Performance’s 275/35R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Prelude’s 40 series tires.
The Z has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Prelude doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.
Suspension and Handling
The Z’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (56.4% to 43.6%) than the Prelude’s (63% to 37%). This gives the Z more stable handling and braking.
For better maneuverability, the Z’s turning circle is 5.2 feet tighter than the Prelude’s (32.8 feet vs. 38 feet).
Chassis
The Z is 6 inches shorter than the Prelude, making the Z easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
Passenger Space
The Z has 1 inch more front headroom, .6 inches more front legroom and .4 inches more front hip room than the Prelude.
Cargo Capacity
A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the Z. The Prelude doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.
Towing
The Z Manual can be flat towed on all four wheels (dinghy towed), allowing recreational vehicle owners to bring it with them on the road. When they reach their destination, the Z can be unhitched and driven around locally. The Prelude can’t be towed flat on the ground.
Servicing Ease
The engine in the Z is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Prelude. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.
Ergonomics
Compared to the Honda Prelude, the Nissan Z eliminates the need for separate garage door openers and associated risks of losing, breaking, or having dead batteries with its optional integrated Homelink® universal remote controlled from the rear view mirror.
The Z is equipped with both FM and AM stereo radios, offering access to more content and better coverage than the Prelude, which solely provides FM radio. With AM radio, you can enjoy a wider variety of stations featuring news, talk shows, sports commentary, native language programing, automated traffic guidance, and emergency broadcasts. AM waves travel further and penetrate buildings and obstacles more effectively than FM signals, especially at night. Having both FM and AM stereo radios the Z offers a more comprehensive listening experience compared to only FM in the Prelude.
HD Radio boasts several benefits over conventional radio: superior sound quality with clearer and consistent FM broadcasts, CD-quality audio, and Multicast Channels offering up to four streams from a single station, adding programming choices. Cars like the Z equipped with available HD Radio provide an improved in-car entertainment experience. The Prelude, devoid of this technology, foregoes these benefits. Selecting the Nissan Z empowers drivers to enjoy a more immersive and enjoyable listening experience while on the go.
